Dorset Bake Off is the icing on the cake

Wednesday saw people gather from all over Dorset for the first West Dorset Cake Bake off – a fun competition for clients and service users of YOU’s West Dorset services.  In all, there were 31 entries from six different services with prizes being awarded for ‘most attractive looking cake’, most awesome cake baked by a young person’, ‘most scrumptious cake from a service’, ‘most fabulous cake baked by member of staff’, ‘most effort put into baking a cake’ and ‘best overall cake’.

“We didn’t think we’d be doing this today,” said Mr and Mrs Ballard, neighbours of the service, who helped judge the competition “it was a really difficult choice as there were such a lot of good cakes.  We’re both very grateful for being a part of it and for the invite.”

“The standard was very high and everyone took the competition really seriously,” said proud manager, Andy Cosma, “this event encompassed everything that YOU is about and really encouraged our young people to be the best they can be.”

From Hampshire to Hotel Good Place: the first 24 hours

Good morning or, as it says in my Serbian guide book, ”zdravo!”  I’ve done quite a bit of travelling over the years but it will take quite something to top the past 24 hours …

I got to Gatwick on time, checked in with relative ease, picked up some tea, biscuits and sweets to take to our hosts and then boarded my flight on Montenegro Airways to destination Podgorica.  That was the easy part!  My stomach was fluttering a little with nerves, I didn’t really have too much in the way of food at the airport or on the 3 hour flight, nor was there much available as a matter of fact.  How glad I was in the hours that came of the oat and raison cookie at Cafe Neros and the sneaky packet of cheese and onion McCoys which I bought in WHSmith just before boarding!

Setting down in Podgorica was fine and passing through transit was fine: the airport was clean and modern but very sparse with only a small duty free shop and a Costa Coffee. From looking out of the window on the flight coming in, it seemed that the airport was set in the middle of nowhere, close to mountains…
